Architectural powder coating

Railings, gates and fences that don’t rust.

Architectural steel and aluminum lives outside forever. Blasting, pretreatment and an exterior-grade powder give railings, gates and fencing a finish that keeps working long after paint gives up.

Corrosion protection

Zinc-rich primer plus an exterior topcoat is a proven two-coat system for steel that lives outdoors.

Weather and UV resistance

Super-durable architectural powders are designed for long-term color and gloss retention in direct sun.

Large pieces handled

Gates and long railing sections are quoted by size. Tell us the dimensions so we can confirm they fit the oven.

How it’s done

Six steps between rust
and “wow.”

The powder gets the attention, but the prep decides how long the finish lasts. Here is what a proper job looks like.

  1. Step 1 · Strip

    Back to bare metal

Old paint, powder and rust come off first — chemical strip or a burn-off oven. Coating over an old finish is how coatings fail.

  2. Step 2 · Blast

    Clean metal, real grip

Abrasive blasting takes the surface to clean, bright metal and cuts a fine anchor profile the powder can lock into.

  3. Step 3 · Prep & mask

    Pretreat, outgas, protect

Phosphate or similar pretreatment boosts corrosion resistance. Castings are pre-baked to release trapped gas. Threads, bores and sealing faces get high-temp plugs and tape.

  4. Step 4 · Spray

    Electrostatic wrap

A charged gun gives every powder particle a static charge. The grounded part pulls it in — so powder wraps around edges, welds and even the back side.

  5. Step 5 · Cure

    Melt, flow, crosslink

In the oven the powder melts, flows out smooth and chemically crosslinks into one continuous, hard film. Timing is measured at metal temperature, not air temperature.

Temp~350–400°FTime10–20 min at metal tempResultHard, bonded film
  6. Step 6 · Inspect

    Measured, not guessed

Film thickness is checked with a gauge, the finish is inspected under light, masking comes off and threads are chased before the part goes home.

    FAQ

    Architectural questions.

Can’t find what you need? Ask — a real person reads every message.

Can installed railings be powder coated?

Powder coating needs an oven, so railings have to come down and come in. For metal that cannot be removed, a field-applied coating system is the alternative.

What is the best finish for outdoor steel?

For steel outdoors, a zinc-rich primer under an exterior-grade topcoat gives the best corrosion resistance. Textured blacks and bronzes are popular because they hide minor dings.

    How is railing priced?

Usually by the linear foot, with gates and panels priced per piece. Ornamental work with lots of pickets costs more because it takes longer to blast and coat.
